Manufacturer configurator requirements

Start with manufacturer-owned rules, component identifiers and checked quotations, then extend the workflow to the intended users.

Prepare a controlled product definition

Organize families, dimensions, materials, compatibility rules and item identifiers into a catalog your technical and commercial owners can review. Name the source and revision of each input. Record exceptions explicitly so the implementation can distinguish an invalid product from a permitted choice requiring approval.

Map the users and handoffs

Write an action matrix for public buyers, dealers and internal estimators. State which ranges and prices each may see, who can request or issue a quote and who approves exceptions. Include the component or specification record needed by the next department. Use that matrix to evaluate the proposed implementation so a channel's permissions and responsibilities are clear before access expands.

Prove the first range end to end

Validate known configurations, incompatible selections, boundary dimensions and checked quotes. Confirm who maintains the catalog after launch and how a rule change is tested. Customer projects establish relevant implementation scope, but your rollout acceptance should depend on your own products, documents and handoffs rather than a generic feature list.

  • Source and revision per rule
  • Defined exception behavior
  • User-specific permissions
