How much engineering data should a public configurator expose?
Review public configurator assets, browser data and private calculations before sharing confidential geometry or component information online.
Table of contents
A public configurator should receive only the information needed for its intended customer experience. Decide which geometry, product attributes and calculations can be public before uploading the engineering library. Hiding a control does not establish that the associated data is absent from the browser.
Classify the source information
Separate public appearance, customer-visible specifications, internal component data and confidential engineering detail. A simplified external model may explain a product without containing internal construction. A public finish label may be necessary while a supplier buying reference remains private.
Ask the proposed team to show the files and data delivered to an ordinary browser. Review downloads, model assets and application responses, not only what is visible on the screen.
| Information | Question for the design review |
|---|---|
| Exterior geometry | What detail is necessary for the customer? |
| Internal construction | Does it need to leave the engineering environment? |
| Commercial data | Which values may the account receive? |
| Product restrictions | What can be public and what is enforced elsewhere? |
| Saved projects | Who can access each record and export? |
Separate visual simplification from product correctness
Removing internal geometry can reduce unnecessary exposure and make a model easier to load. It must not change the customer's understanding of the offered product. Important opening arrangements, dimensions and selected accessories still need an accurate representation.
Keep the approved public model connected to the underlying product reference. A simplified model should not become an unrelated asset that sales continues using after the actual product changes.
Test different account types
A public visitor, dealer and administrator may need different information. Use ordinary accounts to inspect their responses and downloads. Confirm that restricted commercial or technical data is not sent to a role that should not receive it.
Also test saved project links. An obscure URL is not, by itself, a defined permission model. Ask how access is checked and how it changes when a dealer account is removed.
Make the public-data boundary part of Configurix scope
For a Configurix project, review the asset preparation process together with account and integration requirements. Specify the public representation, private calculations and technical outputs separately. Confirm the actual controls included in the proposed implementation.
Can any public 3D model be made impossible to copy?
Do not base your purchase on an absolute promise. Discuss the information the browser receives, appropriate asset preparation and the protections your advisers consider necessary.
Does a password protect every engineering file automatically?
No. Access to each asset and record needs a defined implementation. Test the files and data available to the relevant roles, including after permissions change.
