Should you hire a developer or a configurator delivery team?
Compare an internal developer with a specialist delivery team through maintenance ownership, product knowledge, testing and staff handover.
Table of contents
An internal developer can be the right choice when your business can provide product ownership, engineering input, ongoing support and delivery management. A specialist team may supply more of those capabilities as a service. Compare the complete operating arrangement rather than a salary with a project quotation.
List the jobs hidden inside the word developer
A configurator needs product analysis, interaction design, model preparation, application development and testing. It also needs deployment, account administration, incident handling and catalogue updates. One person may cover several jobs, but the work still exists.
Ask who will make decisions when a rule is unclear. A capable programmer cannot determine an undocumented manufacturing restriction without the right product expert. Buying software does not remove that responsibility from the manufacturer.
Simulate a handover before making the decision
Choose a catalogue rule and ask how a new employee would find its definition, change it, test it and publish it safely. Include a saved project affected by the change. If the explanation depends on knowledge retained only by the original developer, treat documentation and training as missing deliverables.
Run the same exercise with a proposed external partner. A larger team is not automatically easier to hand over if product decisions and deployment access remain undocumented.
| Operating question | Internal arrangement | External arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Product decisions | Named business owner | Named client decision-maker |
| Technical changes | Available skills and review | Included service and response process |
| Absence or departure | Cover and documented access | Continuity and escalation arrangements |
| Future development | Funded capacity | Agreed change and commercial process |
Compare capacity over the life of the application
Your first release may be intensive, followed by a quieter period and occasional substantial catalogue changes. Consider how you will fund and staff that pattern. Include the ability to diagnose a failed integration and restore service outside a planned development cycle.
The comparison should also include what your team wants to learn. An internal technical owner can remain valuable even when an external team builds the application. That person can coordinate data, integrations and acceptance without having to implement every component.
Specify collaboration with Configurix clearly
In a custom Configurix software project, agree the deliverables, operational responsibilities and collaboration with your own staff. Ask which parts your administrators can maintain, which need development work and what a future handover would contain.
Do not choose based on a general claim that custom development is always cheaper or that a platform always prevents maintenance. Compare a product family, an agreed scope and the people available to operate it.
Can our own developer work with a Configurix project?
Discuss the required interfaces, environments and responsibilities. The practical arrangement should be included in the proposal, including how changes are reviewed and supported.
Is having source code enough to guarantee continuity?
No. A future maintainer also needs build instructions, data definitions, environment access, tests and an understanding of the product rules. Agree the handover package before it becomes urgent.
